The Lyman Estate, preserved by Historic New England, was first built in 1793 by Salem, MA architect Samuel McIntire. McIntire was commissioned by Theodore Lyman, who owned the land, and designed the house in a federal style.
In 1880, Theodore Lyman's grandson, Arthur Lyman, purchased the estate with his wife and their six children. Ella and Arthur Lyman hired Boston architect Henry W. Hartwell to expand the house, which continued the Federal architecture in the Queen Anne style.
In 1917, Arthur's son, Arthur Jr. (lol) inherited the estate with his wife Susan and their five children. They hired Boston interior designer Ms. Nonie Tupper to renovate the home in a Colonial-Revival style.
The estate was inherited by Susan Lyman following Arthur Jr.'s death, and following Susan's death, was inherited by their five children. Their children, wanting others to experience the mansion, donated it to Historic New England. The estate is now cared for by Historic New England; offering tours of the mansion and year round access to the Lyman Estate Greenhouses for plant sales.
